Mercedes-Benz has held the world premiere of a new version of the iconic G-Class SUV, now featuring an all-electric powertrain.

Rumors that the model would be designated as the EQG were not confirmed—the electric "G-Wagon" has been named the G580 EQ Technology.

The new version was created by converting the W463-II generation G-Class to electric drive, preserving the original ladder-frame chassis and most of the bodywork.

The traction battery has a capacity of 116 kWh and is mounted within the frame, under the vehicle’s floor. The battery pack is well-protected underneath to prevent damage during off-road driving, with the total weight of the protection amounting to 57.6 kg.

The vehicle is equipped with four electric motors—one for each wheel. Together, they produce 587 horsepower and 1,164 Nm of torque.

The curb weight of the electric G-Wagon is massive—3,085 kg. Despite this, the vehicle has sports car-like performance: it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.

The differential locks in the G580 EQ Technology are simulated by the torque vectoring system.

On a full charge, the new electric G-Class can travel up to 473 km. The battery can be recharged at a 200 kW station, and charging from 10% to 80% takes 32 minutes.

Externally, the electric off-roader has several stylistic and functional differences from its internal combustion engine counterpart. For instance, instead of a traditional radiator grille, it features a grille-like cover with illuminated contours. A newly shaped hood improves aerodynamics, and covers have been added to the front pillars. The widened rear wheel arches also house some aerodynamic components.

The ground clearance of the electric G-Wagon is approximately 23 cm, with an approach angle of 32 degrees and a departure angle of 30.7 degrees. The ramp breakover angle is 20.3 degrees. For comparison, the internal combustion version has a ground clearance of 24.1 cm, approach and departure angles of 31 and 30 degrees, respectively, and a ramp breakover angle of 26 degrees. Both versions can handle a maximum incline of 45 degrees, but the electric version has a greater wading depth—85 cm compared to 70 cm for the standard model.

A key feature of the new design is the G-Turn mode, which allows the vehicle to turn in place, rotating around its vertical axis. There is also a low-speed control mode for off-roading, as well as a simulated engine sound feature called G-Roar.

The coefficient of drag (Cx) has been reduced by 17% compared to the standard version of the SUV—from 0.54 to 0.44.

Mercedes claims that the G580 EQ Technology even surpasses internal combustion versions in off-road conditions, thanks to the more powerful electric motors and the ability to reach peak torque almost instantly.

At the rear, instead of a spare wheel, an optional rectangular compartment is available for storing charging cables, tire chains, and other equipment.

However, from an environmental standpoint, the electric G-Wagon is somewhat questionable. It is a heavy, overpowered, and aerodynamically inefficient vehicle.

In Germany, the new model will be priced starting at €192,500.
